Have You Seen the Viral Video, The Animal Odd Couple (a Dog and an Elephant)?

The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN, exists for two reasons:

  • To provide a haven for old, sick, or needy elephants in a setting of green pastures, hardwood forests, spring-fed ponds, and heated barns for cold winter nights.
  • To provide education about the crisis facing these social, sensitive, passionately intense, playful, complex, exceedingly intelligent, and endangered creatures.

At this sanctuary is a dog, Bella, and elephant, Tarra, who have been best friends for years.  They are inseparable.  One day, Bella had a spinal cord injury and was paralyzed.  Don’t worry, this has a happy ending, but watch the short video to see the effect this had on Tarra:   bit.ly/PAMc

Unravel the Mystery of Your Mixed-Breed Pup With A Simple DNA Test

I own two mixed-breed dogs, both adopted.  Each favor the looks of a specific breed but its apparent there’s a mix of some kind, but which is just a guess.  Curiosity gets the best of me sometimes, especially with Noodles, the darker dog.  Would you like to meet them???

This is Molly, 2 1/2 yrs old. Cocker/Dachshund?

Noodles, the newest member of the family, adopted one month ago. About the same age as Molly. I’m told he’s a Dachshund/King Charles Cavalier, but I don’t know about that.

There’s a reason, other than curiousity, to know the breeds in your dog’s background :

  • Explaining behavior
  • Help in training
  • Managing health

CanineHeritage.com can perform a DNA-based diagnostic test to give you the answer.  $80 per dog.

Feeling of a Time Machine: Watch 7-Minute Film of San Francisco in 1906, Four Days Before Earthquake

This film, taken while on a trolly, was originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn, with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, figured out exactly when it was shot from New York trade papers announcing the film, showing the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall, shadows indicating time of year and actual weather conditions of historical record, even when the cars were registered, even knowing who owned them and when the plates were issued!  It was filmed only four days before the quake and shipped by train to NY for processing.

Now we know why we have painted lines, traffic lights, etc. Notice the long strides of the people walking; pedestrians and traffic go all directions. The streetcar we are on never stops for passengers. We can see why the streets were wide, the cars and wagons are driven from the right hand side!  Also notice how few women were in this footage.

Five Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive

1.  Don’t offer too many choices.  Whether it’s the number of products you offer or the number of plans you allow your employees to choose from, sometimes  you can offer too many choices, which often frustrates people.  Companies offering a small number of retirement plans have far greater enrollment than companies that offer a large number of plans.

2.  Request active commitments.  Ask in a way that elicits an active response.  One common mistake restaurants make when taking phone reservations is ending the call by saying “Please call if you have to cancel.”  By changing that line to “Will you please call if you have to cancel?” (followed by a pause for an answer), one restaurant owner reduced his no-show rate from 30 percent to 10 percent.

3.  Argue against self-interest.  Trust is a critical component to persuasion.  The surest way to be perceived as honest is to admit to a small weakness in your argument, product or business immediately prior to communicating the strongest pro argument.

4.  The threat of loss is more persuasive than the potential for gain.  Instead of telling your audience what they stand to gain from taking your advice or buying your product, tell them instead that they stand to lose out on an opportunity if they don’t take your advice or buy your product.

5.  Make people feel as if they’ve already made progress toward a goal.  A car wash offering a loyalty card nearly doubled customer retention by changing their offer from “Buy eight washes, get one free” to “Buy 10 washes, get one free–and we’ll start you off by crediting you for two washes.”

Cesar Millan’s Pit Bull, Daddy, Passed Away Yesterday

Cesar Millan, all his family and friends, his staff and volunteers, and dog lovers all around the world today will mourn the passing of one of the most loyal, trusting, well-balanced, and influential pit bull ambassadors the world has ever known. Daddy, Cesar’s longtime friend and partner in canine rehabilitation, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday the 19th of February. He was sixteen years old.

I hadn’t realized that Daddy was a cancer survivor.  I’ve also lost beloved pets, my heart goes out to Cesar.  Watching the Dog Whisperer, it becomes clear just how much he loved this dog.   Very sad.
