A personal memorial day for my brother, Steve Barr – 12/15/54-1/3/05

Loved, Loved, LOVED my brother from the moment he was born, when I appointed myself his lifelong protector. Never was there a sweeter, more ingenuous human being, most likely due to my influence :).  He succumbed to complications of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in the Emergency Room of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. His wife, Merle, said he died with a beautiful smile on his face. What a gift that I can remember and think about every January 3rd,  the anniversary of the most painful day of my life.

A few pictures from his life………….

January 1956, 13 mos old

Summer 1957

Steve and I, Summer 1958

1962, picture taken the night prior to cosmetic surgery to have his ears pinned back. Kids teased him, called him Dumbo.

1963 – Ears look great!  Now we have to do something about his protruding teeth, another source of embarrassment to him, and why he often wouldn’t smile in pictures.

At last, braces & big smile 1966

1972, high school grad pic

1983, summer BBQ @ Dad’s

July 2003, with wife, Merle. Such a sweet picture, one of my favorites.

December 15th, 2004, Steve’s 50th birthday, a party I threw for him at the Vine Restaurant in Los Angeles.  He was so happy.  Two weeks later, a respiratory infection, and he was gone.

Bullwinkle J. Moose

Steve had a repertoire of impressions he did very well – Hubert Humphrey, John Wayne, Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, Kirk Douglas, any of the male Kennedy’s. There were more, but my favorite was Bullwinkle, performing many of the routines.  From the age of 10, with Steve’s skinny-as-a-stick legs, he’d re-create the show’s ending theme where Bullwinkle would take it off stage with Broadway flashing lights behind him,  marching Rockette style, one knee up before crisply kicking leg straight out, toes pointed, then leg kicked up high, in perfect form that would make any Rockette proud.

Steve, I love you so much, and know you love me.  Always remember, “Heebie jeebie, jelly beanie, the spirits are about to speak!”

I hope you enjoyed this brief glimpse into Steve’s life and a little of mine.

About the author

Robin Barr is a business owner, animal lover, information and resources junkie, and a fan of innovation. She's also the inventor of award-winning Cold Sores Begone™, an instant preventative, and Canker Sores Begone™, a healing accelerator. A boomer and ENFP, Robin lives in Mission Viejo, Calif.

About Robin Barr

I was born in New Jersey, and when I was 3, my parents moved to Southern CA where I've lived since in Covina, San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, Laguna Niguel and now Mission Viejo. I love dogs and cats and compassionate about all living creatures. What do I do for a living? I invent problem solvers. Have you seen Cold Sores Begone™ or Canker Sores Begone™ in health food stores or online? Mine. I like using stuff that won’t kill me later so both remedies are non-toxic, safe enough for small children, and topical (I don't swallow pills easily). If you want to prevent a cold sore from materializing when you feel the early tingle symptom, apply a few drops of Cold Sores Begone™. Done. If you're plagued with those painful ulcerations inside the mouth (canker sores), apply a few drops of Canker Sores Begone™a few times a day, and it should disappear in 2-3 days. I was elated when PREVENTION and NATURAL HEALTH magazines told the world my two products work as promised. Afterall, I'm just an accidental entrepreneur. Read the circumstances of how I came to be a small business owner here, scrolling down to the paragraph header that starts with "If you're curious...". Everything above it is a repeat of this bio.
